OUR PROPERTY TAXES AND THE UT MEDICAL SCHOOL: WHOSE COW WILL BE MILKED?
A UT COW? |
OR A CAMERON COW? |
The total value of all property on the Cameron County tax rolls amounts to around 19 billion dollars. The per capita income for the county comes in at $14,500, and the median household income is approximately $32,000. Those in Cameron County whose incomes fall below the poverty level amount to 30% of the county's population. This combines to make Cameron one of the poorest counties in the United States.
With one of the expressed goals of the passage of the unneeded and unwanted healthcare district being to support the UTRGV Medical School, why should Cameron County property taxes buttress a medical school associated with one of the wealthiest universities in the country? If a cow were to be milked, wouldn't it make better sense for Cameron County to be milking UT's well-nourished and plump longhorn herd?
