A TAX HOLIDAY!

This weekend has seen the annual flood of parents and students inundating retail establishments throughout Cameron County for this year's tax holiday, as they eagerly sought out bargains in back-to-school clothing and supplies. The traffic in proximity to shopping centers was heavy and, combined with soaring temperatures, getting about in Brownsville was more difficult than usual. Returning to Brownsville after meeting with supporters of Friends of Cameron County Residents in San Benito, my mind began to wander to the general subject of taxes.  Thinking about all the shoppers jamming the highways and byways, it was not a difficult mental hurdle to imagine what a positive shot to the local economy more tax holidays could be and, correspondingly, how negatively a property tax increase would affect the local distribution of goods and services and the future of entrepreneurs supplying them.  Keeping that in mind, along with how a proposed healthcare district would duplicat...

Cameron County Healthcare District

The number one issue now facing our county is the proposed boondoggle known as the Cameron County Healthcare District, which has great potential to bring about soaring property taxes and the imposition of financial hardship on those who can least afford it, namely those of limited income, senior citizens and young families. Designed to favor those with political clout and surreptitiously navigated through the Texas legislature, this scheme would foster a new bureaucracy, which would be nearly impossible to get rid of once in place.  The blueprint for this new taxing district would allow it to have the power of eminent domain and to raise the property tax assessment anywhere from 25 cents to 75 cents per each $100 of assessments.  This is intolerable, and especially so since it would essentially preempt existing agencies presently providing services the district would duplicate.
